初 遇 云 南
In the spring of 2017, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Yunan for one month. Most importantly, I got the chance to volunteer and help out Teacher He at a rural elementary school in the village of Youngan near the city of Tengchong in the province of Yunan working with Shao Nian Pai.
My experience working in China was incredible. When I first arrived at the school, I was amazed by the beautiful scenery in the surrounding. From the school, you could see the backdrop of the Gaoligong mountains and the large fields of rice and canola crops with the local farmers and cattle working in them. This was definitely a change of scenery that I was used to seeing back home like busy roads filled with automobiles, neighborhoods, and businesses.
The lifestyles of the people in and around the school were a contrast from the lifestyles of people in my city. Most of these people made a living through agriculture and other basic services unlike in America where most of the economy revolves around more developed and advanced services and technology. Still, I observed some interesting things during my stay. For example, I was surprised by the large number of people in the countryside that owned phones and used the internet. It's amazing how far technology has spread in so little time.
iPad 课 堂
At the school, the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly to me. With the guidance of teacher He, I helped with an iPad class for 3rd and 4th graders. Even though I have trouble reading Chinese, I still knew how to use iPad and other everyday basic skills related to technology. I helped the kids learn how to use different apps and navigate through the iPad like how to turn on and off the Wi-Fi. Along the way, I learned how to use some new apps as well.
All the kids were always excited for iPad class. It was their special chance to get to interact with technology each school week and they got to play games on the iPad at the end of class if they behaved well. We also went over some practical life skills that they may not be able to learn in regular classes like time management lessons.
I'm glad I was able to help them learn how to use iPad and technology in general. Technology and devices are becoming more and more important to the world. So many things nowadays rely on technology and it is a way to connect people. By learning about technology in the class, the students will be more prepared for the future and it helps them broaden their horizon. Through the use of technology, I was able to stay in touch with my friends back home using the app WeChat.
教 学 观 察
The school that I volunteered at had many differences compared to the schools I grew up at in America. When I had spare time, I was able to observe several classes taught by other teachers like math and English. I observed some distinctions in the teaching styles and the classroom environment in general.
The teachers were stricter and the classroom was more structured. The students were held to a higher standard and I felt like they had military-like behaviors in the classroom. Unlike in America, they were all expected to stand to attention and greet/address the teacher or adults with a salute every time they entered and left the classroom and when they spoke in the class. It seemed like they did not have as much freedom as the students in America.
Another interesting thing is that pretty much all the students lived at the school during the school week. Therefore, everyone had chores and duties that they had to fulfill like sweeping the floors and watering the plants in the gardens. It amazed me how independent the students were at such a young age. They did not get to see their families often and when they got to go home on the weekends, many of their parents did not live with them because they worked elsewhere. They had to learn how to take care of themselves and possibly even their siblings. I only wish my sisters could learn a little from them.
Another interesting observation was that the school was fairly new and accommodating, especially compared to the buildings surrounding it. I realized that some of the students may have better conditions at the school than at their own houses. My stay at the school has made me recognize how blessed and privileged I am to have grown up in such a great environment. It helped me learn to appreciate what I have and to always be positive and thankful.
In conclusion, my trip to China was an eye-opening experience. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. I will forever cherish the memories I made.
